THE GEMSTONE:
Twenty times rarer than diamond, emerald was first discovered in the 16th Century in South America and deposits are still mined there today mainly in Columbia and Brazil.
Derived from the Persian word for green gem, the spectacular green colour is a result of trace amounts chromium or vanadium within the mineral Beryl.
Emerald’s intense, green hue is unmatched by other similar coloured stones and puts it in a class of its own.
A symbol of rebirth, emerald is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth and is associated with fertility, health, and faithfulness.
Emerald is the May birthstone.
